MFA Alumni Wins Film Festival Manupelli Award


The 4th annual Ypsi 24 Hour Film Shootout invited filmmakers from Southeast Michigan to try to produce a short film in 24 hours and compete for $2,400 in cash awards.

This year’s contest happened October 3-4, and the winners were announced on Friday, October 9, 2015.

EMU Art Department alumni Joan Newberry received the Ann Arbor Film Festival Manupelli Award for her short film entitled I’m 28. See the full film on Vimeo here:

Exhibition: Tiff Massey


Tiff Massey is a former metalsmithing student. She was initially in the Jewelry for Non-Majors as a Biology Major. Her initial work was far beyond any others in the course both technically and aesthetically. She decided that metalsmithing was her passion and changed majors. Her area of concentration in metalsmithing lead her to advanced MA work at Wayne State and then on to an MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Congratulations Tiff!



Alexa Deitz at Manifest Gallery


Recent BFA grad Alexa Deitz has work included in Rites of Passage at the Manifest Gallery. Alexa was one of 10 artists selected for exhibition from 130 applicants for this show of current and recent undergraduates. The exhibition runs May 30-June 27. Congratulations Alexa!


Exhibition: Rock, Paper, Sizzle


AIGA Toledo’s summer show, Rock, Paper, Sizzle, will feature work by faculty members Andrew Maniotes and Ryan Molloy and alumni Lori Young and Jenn Stucker. The exhibition asked participants to redesign any album cover of their choosing. Artwork will be auctioned to benefit AIGA Toledo. More information is available here.

Ypsi Gypsies Exhibition Features EMU students and Alumni

BFA alum Alex Mandrila will be showing work at the Bona Sera Cafe in Ypsilanti. Opening reception is June 7 from 7:00-9:00.

Traci Shipley and Suzanne Boissy at Works on Paper Gallery in Toledo


MFA alums Traci Shipley and Suzanne Boissy are both featured in The 94th Toledo Area Artists Exhibition. The exhibition will be on display Feb.1–April 14 in the Works on Paper Gallery. Of the more than 640 works of art submitted, 96 works by 78 artists living within a 150-mile radius of the Museum were selected for the show. Admission to both the exhibition and the Museum is free. The TAA exhibition is widely recognized as the most important juried show in this region. Artist Joe Fig and TMA Mellon Fellow Kate Nesin served as jurors this year. On Feb. 1 opening ceremonies start off with a cash bar at 6:30 p.m. in Libbey Court, followed by the opening reception and awards ceremony at 7:30 p.m. in the Great Gallery


BFA Alum Awarded Ann Arbor Public Art Commisssion


BFA alum Mary Thiefels was awarded a public art commission for her mural proposal “Nourishing Healthy Seeds” for Almendinger Park. The project is under way, and scheduled to be completed soon.

Mary is the founder and owner of TreeTown Murals.
