  • New 3D Arts Complex at Eastern Michigan University's one step closer thanks to new $1 million gift from Windgate Foundation Expand dropdown

    May 18, 2022

YPSILANTI – Eastern Michigan University has received $1 million in additional funding from the Windgate Foundation to help construct a new 3D Arts Complex in the School of Art and Design on campus in Ypsilanti. This new gift comes after a $2.2 million investment from the Foundation last year. The funds are part of a challenge grant and matching gift agreement between the Foundation and the University. Eastern’s new 3D Arts Complex is representative of the University's strategic mission to promote student success and engagement.

“The Windgate Foundation and EMU matching grant, along with the initial matching grant, will allow our students and faculty the opportunity to work in one unified 3D Arts Complex,” said EMU Professor and Director of the School of Art and Design Sandra Murchison. “The new space will offer sufficient cross-over between disciplines to create the types of mixed media works that we aim to teach our students to craft,” she added.

The new 3D Arts Complex is designed to advance opportunities in several arts disciplines by providing a new and expanded space that establishes a collaborative, creative environment for artmaking. The new facility will house the following programs: sculpture, ceramics, furniture design, digital fabrication, 3D design, and metalsmithing. Currently, these programs operate in several buildings across campus.

Additionally, the Complex will welcome students of all ages and skill sets to enhance partnerships with organizations such as the Riverside Arts Center in offering summer workshops to Washtenaw County residents. Teachers from across the state will also be able to participate in a summer institute led by EMU Art Education faculty to refresh and expand on their skills in the studios.

The estimated 24,000 sq. ft. facility will be constructed on the northwest corner of campus as a major expansion to the University’s current Sculpture Studio. It is scheduled for completion by the end of 2023.

To date, the Windgate Foundation has gifted EMU’s School of Art and Design $3.2 million and has once again committed to matching $200,000 if the University raises that amount by April 30, 2023. The estimated expense for the 3D Arts Complex is $7.5 million.

“It has been a genuine thrill to see this dream evolve into reality for the School of Art and Design and the EMU community,” said Murchison.

  • A Windgate Matching Grant to Build The 3D Arts Complex Expand dropdown

    Oct. 18

The School of Art and Design is Building a New 3D Arts Complex! The Eastern Michigan University School of Art and Design is preparing for the next stage of its evolution thanks to a $2.2 million Windgate Foundation grant. The funds from the Windgate Foundation will be utilized as a part of a matching gift agreement with the University to construct a new 3D Arts Complex in the School of Art and Design on the University’s campus in Ypsilanti.

The School of Art and Design at Eastern Michigan University will at long last be able to complete the Arts Complex that was initiated in part by the significant refurbishing of the Sculpture Studio. This final construction project will provide space for all of ceramics, furniture design, 3D Design, sculpture, and our metalsmithing areas to come together in one building that is built to accommodate such intense processes as these. We will establish studios that well serve each area, rather than shoehorning our equipment and needs into previously used buildings on campus that were built for entirely different purposes.

The School of Art & Design and the Eastern Michigan University Foundation are embarking on a $400,000 fundraising campaign for the completion and outfitting of the new Windgate 3D Arts Complex.

If we raise $200,000 by April 30, 2022, the Windgate Foundation will match our fund total! You can donate today or make a pledge and pay off the pledge over the next five years.

We hope you can join us in celebrating and supporting our next chapter!

Eastern Michigan University students among select group to exhibit works at North America's top contemporary furniture design fair

Eastern Michigan University students among select group to exhibit works at North America's top contemporary furniture design fair

A group of Eastern Michigan University students joined 14 other universities participating this spring in one of North America’s most prestigious furniture design events—the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, held in the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan.

    The EMU students' furniture display

The EMU display included a freeform bent wood davenport, a meticulously crafted dining chair, a sculptural chair featuring pyrography, a reclaimed walnut coffee table, and a pair of juvenile stools with special features for children to play with.

For EMU graduate student Laura Earle, it was a singular thrill of her artistic lifetime. She displayed a variety of her highly creative designs, received great feedback, and also met Wendell Castle—whom she calls “the Paul McCartney of furniture design.”

Back Row: Lorena Ganser, Undergraduate Student, Drawing and Painting; Laura Earle, Graduate Student, Furniture Design; Melissa Judd, Recent EMU Alumna, Furniture Design. Front Row: Sara Steenbergh, Continuing Education, Furniture Design; Taj Ali, Recent EMU Alum, Furniture Design. Front Row: Sara Steenbergh, Continuing Education, Furniture Design; Taj Ali, Recent EMU Alum, Furniture Design. Not pictured: Dulce Morales, Undergraduate Student, Furniture Design; Esraa Malky, Graduate Student, Interior Design.

Earle, a graduate student in the furniture design program in the EMU School of Art & Design, spearheaded the trip for the group, which included two introductory students, a continuing education student and two recent graduates.

Attendees included Lorena Ganser, an undergraduate student concentrating in drawing and painting; Dulce Morales, an undergraduate in furniture design; Esraa Malky, a graduate student in interior design; Sara Steenbergh, a continuing education student in furniture design; and recent furniture design graduates Melissa Judd and Taj Ali.

“Each student shared their experience and skillset, making meaningful contributions to putting the exhibition together,” Earle said. “For example, Sara Steenbergh helped write a grant proposal. Taj Ali managed warehousing. Melissa Judd oversaw shipping. So, in addition to creating beautiful furniture to display, each student shouldered some of the administrative work to make the exhibition a success.”

Participating schools included the Rhode Island School of Design, known as one of the top art schools in the country; along with the University of Iowa, the University of Oregon, the Rochester Institute of Technology and Virginia Tech University.

The fair is billed as the premier North American global design showcase for furniture, flooring, lighting and other accessories, attracting more than 700 exhibitors and 33,000 attendees. The annual event also features a schools program, aimed at fostering emerging design talent from universities such as Eastern Michigan.

“It’s a very prestigious show,” said Sandra Murchison, director of the School of Art and Design. “Having our student work so well received at the ICFF is a real vote of confidence for the Furniture Design Program here at Eastern.”

Earle exhibited several designs, including a distinctively shaped steel chair, an accent table made of aluminum cast into walnut, and interlocking felt ottomans noted by Design Milk on its “The Best of ICFF” blog. Earle’s animatronic wall divider caught the eye of several attending hospital architects interested in discussing such an installation for children’s cancer wards. Animatronic refers to the use of robotic devices to emulate an animal, in this case fish.

An animatronic fish wall divider, left, was among the student work exhibited in the show.

An animatronic fish wall divider, left, was among the student work exhibited in the show.

Other EMU student designs included a freeform bent wood davenport, a meticulously crafted dining chair, a sculptural chair featuring pyrography (the art of decorating wood or leather by burning a design on the surface with a heated metallic point), a reclaimed walnut coffee table, and a pair of juvenile stools with special features for children to play with.

The group, which stayed in a youth hostel, received financial support from the School of Art and Design and a grant from the Furniture Society, a nonprofit, educational organization headquartered in Asheville, N.C.

“It was phenomenal,” Earle says of the experience. “It was life changing for all of the students. It was very gratifying to watch their world open up.”

Earle savored her meeting with Castle, whom she calls “a rock star” of the furniture world—a legendary artist that everyone in the field knows and admires.

“We talked about converting a five-axis robotic arm for CNC milling,” Earle said of a specialized, computer-controlled milling technique the two discussed. “It was so geeky and wonderful.”

Earle, from Pittsfield Township, has a background in graphic and product design, earning her undergraduate degree from Purdue University in visual communication design and industrial design.

But, with her children grown, she began graduate studies at Eastern. She was in the interior design program at first, but took a furniture design class and was enthralled.

“I really love the sculptural element of it,” she says of her studies. “I’m enjoying myself immensely. When you hit your sweet spot, the sky’s the limit.”

    Amy Sacksteder: Easement

Faculty member Amy Sacksteder's recent work is currently on view at Alma College's Flora Kirsch Beck Gallery through Thursday, March 16. The exhibition features work on paper, paintings, and a glass and bronze wall installation that was fabricated with the help of EMU alumni Illana Houten, Jessica Tenbusch, and Elize Jekabson.

    From Alma College's press release:

The exhibition, titled “Easement,” plays off of the two potentially contradictory definitions of the term — to allay fears and the right to use or gain access to someone else’s property for a specific purpose.

“In the wake of the election, inauguration, Dakota Access Pipeline turmoil and climate change, land rights have been very much on my mind,” says Sacksteder.

Among the works to be showcased are portions of the series “Cairn” and “Fear Souvenirs.” The latter includes works from 2016 and 2017.

The exhibition will culminate in a closing exhibition and 7:30 p.m. artist lecture on March 16, 2017.

An Artificial Relationship to Nature: Work by Jason DeMarte

As part of Month of Photography Denver 2015, RULE Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of work by Jason DeMarte entitled Confected. The show will open with a public reception on Friday, March 27, 2014 from 6-9pm and will be on view March 27 – May 9, 2015.

Additionally, DeMarte will be giving a public lecture titled “An Artificial Relationship to Nature: Work by Jason DeMarte” on Saturday, March 28, 2pm – 4pm at RedLine. Several of DeMarte’s photographs will also be on view in the RedLine exhibition Playing With Beauty, opening Saturday March 14.

Confected examines our cultural tendency to idealize the natural world while continually trying to improve upon it. DeMarte explores the veneer of material desire and constructed natural beauty by composing fictional tableaus that speak to our obsession with beauty, perfection and excess. Meanwhile, underneath the bright colors is an oppressive sense of disenchantment. By “improving” on the natural elements with lighting and post processing, nature becomes just another commercial good, victim to our materials desires. Carefully arranged, and then “sweetened” with sugary items and bright primary colors, DeMarte’s confections are indulgent treats that play with the boundary between the contrived and the natural. In the end the pieces mimic a consumer economy screaming for our attention and demanding that we desire more.
