The advanced Metalsmithing students were invited by Kyle Connolly of Grindstone Forge to his home for lunch and a demo in his home studio. Kyle has been working in the EMU studio making chasing tools and working on repousse work. He also cleaned and got the blacksmithing area in the EMU studio up and running. He has done many demos in the EMU studio including one for Women’s Studies Women’s History month event.

The students and Dr. Otto appreciate the time, energy and knowledge Kyle has shared with us this winter semester.

Sign up for Letterpress Workshop at Salt & Cedar Letterpress Studio in Detroit

Learn letterpress at a two-day conference at Salt & Cedar Letterpress Studio in the Eastern Market area of Detroit, May 4-5, 2013

At this conference, the proprietor of Salt & Cedar, Megan O’Connell, will give a presentation on a commission for a newly-established museum. You will get an insiders’ look at all stages of book publication, from creative envisioning to production. An exhibition within the space will also serve as a source for dynamic discussion and analysis. You’ll then learn about the various conventions, histories, anatomy of letterforms, and begin to gain a sense of the finer points of letterpress printing through a demonstration on a Vandercook letterpress. You will have the chance to compose a themed suite of broadsides, which you will present at the close of the second day. After exchanging prints you will go to Cranbrook to attend a lecture given by artist/designer Nina Katchadourian http://www.cranbrookart.edu/Pages/Calendar.html.

FEES & ENROLLMENT
Enrollment is open to all students but is limited to 12 participants.
A place is not guaranteed until your $15 fee is paid.

Please put $15 checks made out to Salt & Cedar Letterpress Studio or $15 cash along with your name in Leslie Atzmon’s mailbox in the Art Office, 114 Ford Hall.

Sign up at http://bit.ly/Xmv1h3

SALT & CEDAR
A printing press, as a shaper of culture and dispatcher of narratives, continually reflects back its context, even after the fact of its existence. It provides a portal into the ideals, structures, priorities, production modes, economies, and material assets of a particular time and place. As an artist-driven initiative, Salt & Cedar–a letterpress print shop in the heart of Detroit’s Eastern Market–is a site for the incubation of ideas and a promulgator of traditional and hybrid printing methods. The studio revels in the recombinant nature of design. Unveils principles of production and distribution. Believes that composition is explanation. Embraces reinvention. Locates sites for unexpected collaborations and uncharted findings. Forms communications in multiple dimensions. Continually examines and re-frames its practices for the sake of enlightened change.

This conference was organized by EMU’s AIGA students and is supported by the Art Department and Student Government at EMU.

Salt & Cedar is located in Detroit’s Eastern Market at 2448 Riopelle Street
