Richard Rubenfeld was born in New York, NY. He received a BA in Fine Arts from Hofstra University in 1970, a MA in History of Art from The Ohio State University in 1972, and a PhD in History of Art from The Ohio State University in 1985. He began teaching at EMU in 1986.
Art history has been a love of mine since childhood, and I make a point of seeing as much original art that I can. I pride myself for being non-elitist and for keeping an open mind. At EMU I teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses, including Art History Survey II, Renaissance Art, Nineteenth-Century Art, Twentieth-Century Art, Art Appreciation and several classes that focus on modern and post-modern art. I have been active in the University’s Studies Abroad program since 1990 and have taught students in France, Italy, Spain, Greece and England. Since 2001 I have curated or co-curated eight exhibitions on campus, including shows of World War II propaganda, comic and cartoon art and pinball machines. An exhibition of the work of contemporary Michigan cartoonists and comic creators that I co-curated with SPEED BUMP creator, Dave Coverly, opened in University Gallery in March 2009 and has traveled so far to Lapeer and Canton and will be shown in the Ella Sharp Museum in Jackson next August.
